Do you know how a song will just stick in your soul? Not your head, that's different. This is where the song just plays over and over in your head for weeks and weeks randomly through the day. Wherever you go the song is there. When your mind goes quiet it's there. I have this happen to me often. I usually refer to these songs as my theme for whatever season of my life that I'm in.
I wanted to share the latest song that has been speaking to me. It's wonderful.
(It is well with my soul)
I love this song, it has helped me through some tough times. I have always loved this song, but hearing the history of it, why it was written, is heartbreakingly beautiful. It changes everything.
The very short story is that Horatio G. Spafford's wife and daughters set sail to Europe. During the long journey, the ship that was carrying his wife and children sank. Sadly, his wife was the lone survivor of his family. While he was sailing over to be with his wife, the captain pointed out one night that they were likely passing over the site where the ship sank. Horatio sat down that night and wrote It is Well With My Soul.
I cannot imagine the state he must have been in that night, but the words he penned have forever changed the world. I encourage you to read the whole story here but be prepared to have tissues on hand.
And if you haven't heard the song, you can listen to it here:
